Rev. W. Barry Moriarty, C.M. died in the late evening, March 1, 2017, surrounded by his family and many confreres at our DePaul Vincentian Residence in Chicago. He was 77 years old.
Barry was born in Chicago on January 2, 1940 to the late Theresa (Ryan) and Daniel Moriarty. He entered the Internal Seminary at the Barrens May 30, 1958, and became an Incorporated Member on May 30, 1963. Barry was ordained to the Priesthood at DeAndreis Seminary, Lemont by Archbishop John Cody on May 19, 1967.
Barry’s first assignment after ordination was as Vocation Director, based at St. Vincent de Paul High School Seminary, Lemont. In June of 1971, he became Student Director at St. John’s High School Seminary, Kansas City. In June of 1975, Barry moved to St. Louis to take up the duty of Dean of Students at Cardinal Glennon College Seminary.
In July of 1980, Barry returned to school to prepare for new formation duties. He received an S.T.M. in spirituality from Regis College, Toronto, and, after a M. A. in English Literature from DePaul University, a doctorate in English from St. John’s University. Armed with these achievements, in August of 1982, Barry welcomed the first Internal Seminary class to Damascus House, New Orleans. He continued to serve as the Director of the Internal Seminary until August, 1988.
Next, Barry returned to Chicago and served as associate and then pastor at St. Vincent de Paul Parish from September, 1988 until July, 1994. Then he moved to Philadelphia and once more directed the Internal Seminary for two years.
In July, 1996, Fr. Barry began what was undoubtedly the most beloved assignment of his ministerial life, formation work at DePaul Centre, Nairobi. Until May, 2011, Barry dedicated his service and himself to the Mission in Kenya. He worked hard to build the physical plant at DePaul Centre, and he worked even harder to build up the community of East African confreres.
Due to serious illness, Barry returned to the States in the summer of 2011. He ultimately settled in at DePaul Vincentian Residence, in his beloved Chicago, until his death. Barry was a great educator and formator, a good friend to so many, and above all a good confrere to us. He will be deeply missed! May he rest in peace!
He is survived by a brother, sisters, and their spouses. The late Daniel Moriarty (Kaye); the late Carol Sweeny (Ted); Sr. Rita Moriarty, CSJ; Sharon (Doug) Waite; Terry Moriarty; Mary Beth Sorrels (Stan), many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews. In his illness, he received significant care from Karen Malone.
