Fr. Michael Nguyen, of the Eastern Province of the Congregation of the Mission, knows the experience from inside the frame of a 13-year-old.
Most of us know some form of this story in the abstract. The Israelites were a persecuted and enslaved people in Egypt. The pilgrims who first landed on our shores. Fast forward to 1980 and the Cuban "Boat people". Closer to home for me is the story of my orphaned mother. Barely 16, she crossed the Atlantic as an unaccompanied minor.
Fr. Mike’s story combines elements of these stories. Today, four decades later, he has a degree in Canon Law and served two terms as Consultor of the Eastern Province. Currently, he is engaged in formation ministry for the Eastern Province. Today he shares his story in a slightly edited version of a Novena he preached at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, in Germantown, PA.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Rosary. According to tradition, the concept of the Rosary was given to Saint Dominic in an apparition by the Virgin Mary in the year 1214. Perhaps, devotion to the Rosary is one of the most notable features of popular Catholic spirituality. Pope John Paul II placed the Rosary at the very center of Christian spirituality and called it "among the finest and most praiseworthy traditions of Christian contemplation.
I know what it is like to flee one's country for a better life! The Rosary got me through being one of the boat people fleeing Vietnam.

Beautiful story. I believe Mary protects my son Marty. Please pray for my 5 yr old son Marty Brogan that he remains cancer free and lives a very long, healthy and happy life.
